US Embassy Abuja Issues Health Alert as Nigeria Restarts Ebola Screening at Ports of Entry

27 October 2026

The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a health alert stating that the Government of Nigeria has reactivated screening measures related to Ebola disease for all international travellers. The measures apply at ports of entry across the country and include the possibility of quarantine.

Travellers arriving by air, land or sea will be screened by communicable disease control officers. Those screened could face mandatory quarantine or self isolation for a period of at least 21 days.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention reported one confirmed Ebola case in the country as of 26 October 2026. The Government of Nigeria notified the case under the International Health Regulations of 2005. The patient has since been repatriated to their home country.

The health alert, published by the United States Mission Nigeria on 27 October 2026, informs travellers of the restarted procedures at international ports of entry. Authorities have not provided further public details on the origin of the confirmed case beyond the fact of its repatriation.

Nigerian health officials have previously applied similar screening and isolation protocols during earlier Ebola outbreaks in the region. The current measures follow the single confirmed case and aim to limit any further transmission through points of entry.
