EFCC Arrests 21 Suspected Cybercrime Fraudsters in Lekki Sting Operation

Operatives of the Lagos Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission carried out a sting operation in the early hours of Monday, 26 October 2026, at Applewood Estate on Orchid Road, Lekki, Lagos State. The operation targeted suspected cybercrime fraudsters who allegedly obtained money from unsuspecting victims through gift cards, cryptocurrencies and international money transfers while impersonating various individuals.

The operation, which began at 5 am, led to the arrest of 21 suspected fraudsters and the seizure of five exotic cars. EFCC officials stated that the suspects were apprehended following diligent pre arrest surveillance and reconnaissance of their activities. During the operation, a young woman who attempted to alert the suspects by making telephone calls was detained and her phone was temporarily confiscated. The phone was later returned to her once the operation concluded.

Preliminary investigations have led to the indictment of 19 of the arrested individuals, while the remaining two have been released. The Commission confirmed that all indicted suspects will be arraigned in court without delay.

In its statement, the EFCC emphasised that the operation was conducted professionally, with no reports of harassment, intimidation or unlawful arrest. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to its ongoing crusade against economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption. It urged the public to continue supporting its efforts and to condemn the activities of fraudsters who bring the nation into disrepute.

The EFCC added that it remains open to constructive engagement from well meaning Nigerians, while warning that blackmailers and alarmists will not be permitted to undermine its mandate.
