Former Nigerian international Emmanuel Emenike has spoken of his pain after reports of violence at Emenike Hospital in Imo State on 21 October 2026. The former Africa Cup of Nations winner, who built the facility after a career that included spells in Europe, said a place created to offer care and hope should never leave patients afraid or staff feeling unsafe.
In statements posted on social media, Emenike said individuals described as coming from an Imo State waste management agency entered the hospital premises. They allegedly assaulted staff and patients and removed the hospital administrator and cashier. The hospital also claims that armed police officers from Oji Police Station took part. These events followed an earlier entry by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, ordered by the Divisional Police Officer of Owerri Urban Division, on 25 September 2026.
Emenike has called on the Imo State Government, the Nigeria Police Force and relevant oversight bodies to act. He wants an urgent and impartial investigation to establish what took place and identify everyone involved. He has asked for the immediate release of the administrator and cashier, who he says were wrongly detained after being brutalised at Oji Police Station. He has further requested that anyone injured receives medical care, that witnesses can report safely, and that available CCTV footage, incident records and other evidence are preserved and reviewed. He has also urged appropriate action against any official or agency found responsible for unlawful conduct.
He stressed that no enforcement operation should endanger patients, disrupt emergency care or involve violence against hospital staff. Public institutions, he said, must act within the law, and any allegation of abuse must be investigated transparently.
Emenike recalled that after representing Nigeria on the international stage, playing in Europe and celebrating the triumph of winning the Africa Cup of Nations, he chose to bring his experience home to Imo State. He invested in his community by building the hospital so that people could seek care, find comfort and hold on to hope. He described the project as a gesture of faith in his people and a commitment to helping his home state thrive.
He concluded that the hospital community needs protection and support. Imo State deserves investment, its people deserve safety, and every hospital should remain a place of care and hope.
The claims are drawn from Emenike’s own account. At the time of writing no public response from the Imo State Government or the Nigeria Police Force had been reported.
