The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a suspected counterfeit alcoholic drinks production facility at No. 25 Omenazu Street in Aba, Abia State.
Acting on credible intelligence, NAFDAC officials discovered the site operating in unhygienic conditions. The suspected operator fled upon the team’s arrival, abandoning a vehicle that contained counterfeit packaging materials bearing the names of Sir Edwards Scotch Whisky and Scottish Hills Whisky, along with empty bottles and a drum holding approximately 200 litres of liquid.
Inside the facility, officers found counterfeit packaging materials, bottle caps, sealing machines, empty bottles, cartons, tanks containing various liquid concoctions, and dirty sieves reportedly used in the production process. Plastic buckets and drums containing ethanol, including some with tree bark immersed in the liquid, were also recovered. These findings have raised serious concerns about the safety and quality of any products manufactured at the site.
The estimated value of the equipment, materials, and facility components exceeds ₦500 million.
In a reaction from the presidency, Bayo Onanuga stated that the counterfeiters “certainly have no conscience” and added that such activities would continue “until we start imposing a death penalty on them”.
NAFDAC has urged members of the public to provide credible information on suspected illegal manufacturing activities by contacting its Call Centre.
