Peter Obi has said that the task of building a new Nigeria is the collective responsibility of all citizens and that there is no better time to begin the work than now.
The former Anambra State governor and 2027 NDC presidential candidate made the remarks after honouring an impromptu invitation to meet fellow Nigerians in Manchester, United Kingdom. He described spending time with compatriots in the diaspora, listening to their concerns about the nation, and being encouraged by their passion and desire to build a new Nigeria for all.
In a statement, Mr Obi warned that the nation is standing on the brink of a precipice and must not shrink from the arduous task ahead. He identified massive corruption and accumulated leadership failures as the main obstacles to national progress and development. He told the gathering that Nigeria remains one of the most blessed countries in the world and would have taken its place among the most developed countries if not for the corruption and leadership failure bedevilling it.
“No nation can rise above the character, competence, capacity and commitment of those entrusted with its leadership,” he said. For this reason, he urged Nigerians to approach the coming general elections as a race for national survival rather than another routine exercise. “It is our collective battle. The nation is ours to save for the birth of a new Nigeria that is possible.”
The meeting and subsequent statement come as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections. Mr Obi has consistently framed the next election cycle as critical to the country’s direction and has repeatedly called for competence, character and commitment in leadership.
