Kempton Park, South Africa: A Nigerian national who operates a second hand goods shop in Kempton Park has appeared in a South African court accused of buying and reselling a Garmin smartwatch that belonged to the late runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo. He faces charges of theft, money laundering and contraventions of South Africa’s Second Hand Goods Act.
Kenneth Chibuzor, together with Stephen Mahlakwane Sekhukhune and Danial Anthony Moat, appeared before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on 12 October 2026. The South African National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) alleges that the Garmin Venu smartwatch, valued at between R9 000 and R11 000, was acquired less than 24 hours after Moselakgomo was last seen alive on 9 September 2026.
According to the NPA, Chibuzor bought the watch for R900 from an unidentified person without obtaining and recording the seller’s identification details and other transaction particulars required under South African law. He then sold the device to Sekhukhune on 10 September. Sekhukhune allegedly registered the watch to his Gmail account the same day at about 11.43am after Moselakgomo’s profile information and settings had been erased. He later sold it to Moat for R4 000. Moat is accused of advertising the watch on Facebook Marketplace and selling it for the same amount to a fourth person, who has not been charged because of insufficient evidence linking them to the alleged offences.
Chibuzor faces charges under the Second Hand Goods Act 6 of 2009 for allegedly failing to keep the prescribed register and record the required details of the acquisition and disposal of the watch. An alternative charge alleges that he conducted business as a second hand goods dealer without the required registration. He also faces money laundering and theft charges, or alternatively possession of goods reasonably suspected to have been stolen or receiving stolen property without reasonable cause to believe that the person who disposed of it was entitled to do so. Sekhukhune and Moat face charges of money laundering and theft, or alternatively possession of or receiving stolen property. All three face a common law theft charge alleging that they acted individually or in furtherance of a common purpose to steal the watch between 9 and 10 September, intending permanently to deprive its owner of it.
Sekhukhune and Moat were each granted bail of R10 000. Conditions include surrendering their passports and reporting to the Kempton Park police station every Monday and Friday. The state did not oppose their release. Chibuzor’s bail application was postponed to 19 October while the South African Department of Home Affairs verifies his immigration status. He remains in custody. No formal pleas have been entered.
Moselakgomo, 38, left her home in Kempton Park for a routine afternoon run on 9 September. Her eight year old daughter raised the alarm when she failed to return. Her partially clothed body was found in bushes in Rhodesfield three days later, on 12 September. South African police have confirmed that none of the three men has been charged with her murder. Investigations into her killing continue.
NPA regional communications officer Magaboke Mohlatlole said the state alleges that the smartwatch was acquired less than 24 hours after Moselakgomo was last seen and was subsequently sold and resold by the accused. The matter has been postponed to 19 October 2026.
This is a South African court case arising from events in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. The recovery of the watch forms part of a wider investigation into Moselakgomo’s death, which has drawn public attention amid concerns over gender based violence in the area.
