Nigeria Police Arrest Man Over Video Alleged to Incite Religious Violence

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a 22 year old man from Zamfara State in connection with a viral video that allegedly contains statements capable of inciting religious violence.

Umar Ibrahim Gandi Maradun, from Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State, was taken into custody after the video spread widely online. The footage reportedly shows the young man wearing the uniform of Jama’atu Izalatil Bidi’a Wa’ikamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS) and making remarks said to threaten public peace and peaceful coexistence.

The Zamfara State Police Command activated its intelligence resources to identify those involved. Officers also engaged the leadership of JIBWIS at both national and state levels. The organisation’s leadership reportedly disassociated the group from the alleged conduct and handed the suspect over to the police.

A comprehensive investigation has begun. The Nigeria Police Force stated that the suspect will be charged before a competent court if sufficient evidence establishes that an offence has been committed under applicable law.

In a statement issued on 27 October 2026, Force Public Relations Officer CSP Ani Iniedu, anipr, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to protecting all citizens irrespective of religious affiliation. The statement also underlined the constitutional right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. The Force pledged to take appropriate lawful action against any conduct capable of inciting religious hatred, provoking violence or threatening public peace.

Members of the public have been urged to refrain from further sharing the video or circulating unverified information that could heighten religious tensions or threaten public order. Residents are advised to remain calm and allow the police to conclude the investigation.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, maintaining public order and promoting peaceful coexistence across the country. The statement was issued from Force Headquarters in Abuja.
