The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has identified two further suspected cases of Ebola virus disease together with 53 primary contacts.
Jide Idris, Director General of the NCDC, announced the development at a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday. He said the agency had established two additional suspected cases and 53 primary contact links. “They are primary contacts. We have an isolation centre and a quarantine centre,” he stated.
Idris explained that between nine and 12 public and private laboratories are available to test for Ebola. He added that the centre has strengthened its laboratory capacity to help prevent further spread of the disease. The NCDC will continue to issue regular updates and has urged private health facilities to review their preventive measures.
The announcement comes after Nigeria confirmed an imported case of Ebola virus disease in the Federal Capital Territory on 20 October. The patient, a woman who had recently travelled from Uganda, developed symptoms on 7 October and sought medical care several days later. Health authorities have been tracing and monitoring contacts linked to the confirmed case, with the number of primary contacts now standing at 53.
A separate suspected case reported in Rivers State has tested negative and been cleared. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely as investigations proceed.
