EFCC Recovers $104,950 for United States Based Businesswoman in Lagos

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recovered and returned a total of $104,950 to Mrs Adeshola Oshilaja, a businesswoman based in the United States, following an investigation into suspected procurement fraud.

On Friday, 9 October 2026, the Commission handed over the outstanding balance of $56,000 to Oshilaja at its Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 in Ikoyi, Lagos. This completed the full recovery of the funds. The defendant, Babatunde Samuel Akinsanmi, had earlier paid $48,950 directly to Oshilaja.

The recovery followed a petition filed by Oshilaja. She alleged that Akinsanmi, her business associate and family friend, failed to account for money she provided for the purchase of 10 dump trucks from China.

According to the petition, Oshilaja transferred $104,950 to two Chinese companies, Jinan Goneng Power Technology Company and China Howo Heavy Truck Industry Limited, on Akinsanmi’s instructions.

The EFCC’s investigation established that the parties signed a written agreement on 25 July 2023. Under the agreement, Akinsanmi acknowledged receipt of the $104,950 for the procurement of the trucks and undertook to refund the sum on or before 31 December 2023.

Six of the trucks were later delivered to Akinsanmi in Nigeria. Oshilaja alleged that he kept and used the vehicles for his own business without remitting any proceeds to her.

The Commission recovered the full amount of $104,950 during its investigation. Of this, $48,950 was paid to Oshilaja initially, while the remaining $56,000, recovered in cash, was handed over to her at the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1.

Speaking at the handover, the Acting Zonal Director of the Directorate, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE I Adebayo Adeniyi, was represented by the Head of Public Affairs, Deputy Commander of the EFCC, DCE Ayo Oyewole. He said the recovery demonstrated the Commission’s commitment to returning recovered funds and assets to their rightful owners in line with due process.

He added that the EFCC would continue to investigate alleged financial crimes and ensure appropriate restitution for victims.

After receiving the money, Oshilaja thanked the Commission for its work and professionalism.

“I am so happy and grateful for all the effort the EFCC has put towards the recovery of this money. I am a testament to what the EFCC is doing in Nigeria, and I can always rely on the fact that you are really working hard. May God bless you all,” she said.
