Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has expressed condolences over the death of Mallam Nafiu Baba Ahmed, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria.
In a message posted on his X account on 7 October 2026, Obi described the late Mallam Nafiu as a lawyer, scholar and administrator who served with dedication and distinction. He noted that the deceased was also a bridge builder who believed in justice, peaceful coexistence and the importance of bringing people together.
Obi said the passing of Mallam Nafiu is a loss to his family, the Council, Kaduna State, the Muslim Ummah and the nation. He added that at a time when Nigeria needs more voices for peace, understanding and justice, his absence will be deeply felt.
The former governor extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues and all who mourn him. He prayed that Almighty God would forgive his shortcomings, grant him eternal rest, and give his loved ones the strength and comfort to bear this painful loss.
Mallam Nafiu Baba Ahmed, who was born on 11 June 1956 in Zaria, Kaduna State, died in the early hours of 6 October 2026 in Abuja at the age of 70. He had a distinguished career in law and the financial sector, including roles at the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation and Jaiz Bank, before serving for many years as Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria. Funeral prayers were held at the National Mosque in Abuja after the Zuhr prayers, and he was buried at Gudu Cemetery according to Islamic rites.
Tributes have also come from President Bola Tinubu, the Sultan of Sokoto, Professor Isa Ali Pantami and other religious and political figures, who described him as a dedicated servant of Islam and an advocate for justice and unity.
