The Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Bello Muhammad Kaloma, also known as Muhammad Auwal, before Justice Aminu Garba of the Federal High Court in Bauchi, Bauchi State.
Kaloma faces a four count charge of obtaining by false pretence and money laundering involving the sum of six million, one hundred and sixty thousand naira (N6,160,000.00). Count one states that on or about 23 April 2025, within the jurisdiction of the court, he obtained an aggregate sum of five million, seven hundred thousand naira (N5,700,000.00) via electronic transfer from MB Modi Logistics Nigeria Ltd, a company belonging to Musa Umar Ibrahim, into his personal account (Bello Muhammad Kaloma, account number 2179366014) domiciled at First City Monument Bank (FCMB). This was done under the false pretence that the money was for the purchase of a tractor auctioned by the Executive Chairman of Ganjuwa Local Government Area, a pretence he knew to be false. The offence is contrary to Section 1(1)(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.
Kaloma pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him. Prosecution counsel M.T. Iko then asked the court to fix a trial date and to remand the defendant in a Correctional Centre. Justice Garba adjourned the matter until 30 October 2026 for trial and ordered that Kaloma be remanded in the Correctional Centre.
The case began when Kaloma approached the petitioner and claimed that his boss intended to auction a tractor for N6,160,000.00. After the money was paid in two tranches, neither the tractor was delivered nor the funds refunded.
