President Trump Replies to Tinubu’s Letter

The Nigerian presidency has released a statement presenting US President Donald Trump’s correspondence as high praise for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, while carefully framing the exchange in a manner that obscures a key fact: Trump was responding to an unsolicited letter from Tinubu, not initiating contact.

In a State House press statement issued on 22 July 2026 and signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), the presidency announced that “US President Donald Trump has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decisive leadership ‘on behalf of the Nigerian people.’” The statement continued that Trump had applauded Tinubu’s resolve “to tackle the issues plaguing Nigeria, especially the violence affecting Christian communities.”

Yet the full text of Trump’s letter, dated 6 July 2026 and published by the presidency itself, begins with the words: “Thank you for your thoughtful letter.” This opening makes clear that the American president was replying to an earlier, unsolicited communication from the Nigerian side. The letter goes on to express appreciation for Tinubu’s “decisive leadership,” to note shared concerns about violence affecting Christian communities, and to reaffirm cooperation against terrorism, including the deployment of US Special Operations Forces and the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap.

The presidency’s statement, however, does not highlight this sequence. Instead, it presents Trump’s remarks as spontaneous endorsement, detailing previous joint efforts such as the establishment of a Joint Working Group, a May 2026 operation against ISIS in the Lake Chad area, and a recent visit by US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Frank Garcia. The effect is to convey the impression of an unsolicited American initiative rather than a reciprocal exchange triggered by Tinubu’s own unprompted letter.

Observers note that this framing allows the Nigerian government to publicise international support while downplaying the fact that the correspondence was initiated from Abuja without prior invitation. Trump’s letter itself is unambiguous: it is a reply to an unsolicited approach, not an opening salvo. By releasing the document under a headline that emphasises Trump’s praise without equally emphasising its responsive nature, the presidency has shaped the narrative for both domestic and international audiences.
