The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have promptly completed an inquiry into an “unacceptable incident” in which a soldier vandalised a Christian statue in a Lebanese village, the Israeli Prime Minister has announced.
The soldier who damaged the statue and the soldier who photographed the incident have both been removed from combat duty and will serve 30 days in military detention, according to a statement issued via the Prime Minister’s official X account.
In co-operation with the local Christian community, the IDF has replaced the damaged statue with a new one.
The statement expressed Israel’s deep regret over the incident and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to protecting Christians within its jurisdiction while pursuing freedom of worship for all religions.
“Israel will continue to adamantly protect Christians within its jurisdiction and pursue freedom of worship for all religions,” the Prime Minister’s office said.
