Ghana Repatriates 120 Nigerian Nationals Rescued from Cybercrime Setups

Ghana has completed the repatriation of 120 Nigerian nationals who were rescued during a major operation against cybercrime networks operating in the country. The return of the group was facilitated by the Ghana Air Force and the Ministry of Defence.

The individuals were among those found during Operation Cyberhunt, a sting led by the Cyber Security Authority of Ghana. The operation involved cooperation with intelligence and security agencies in Ghana as well as counterparts in the United Kingdom, Nigeria and the United States. Officials stated that the 120 persons had been trafficked into Ghana and forced to work in cybercrime setups.

During the operation, authorities seized 136 mobile phones, 130 laptops, internet connection devices, four motor vehicles and other digital equipment. One of the vehicles had been stolen in Canada. Search teams also recovered high value items including jewellery and ten Nigerian passports.

Eight other persons are being processed for prosecution. Samuel Nartey George, the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, expressed gratitude to the Ghana Air Force and the Ministry of Defence for their role in returning the 120 Nigerian nationals. He said Ghana under President John Dramani Mahama would remain an unfavourable destination for cyber criminals.

The repatriation forms part of the response to the trafficking of the Nigerian nationals who were compelled to participate in the cybercrime activities uncovered by the multi agency operation.
