EFCC Begins Probe of Enugu Businesswoman Over Alleged N8.2 Million Job Scam

Operatives of the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have opened an investigation into Stella Ezinne Egotanwa, a 45 year old businesswoman, for allegedly defrauding 21 people of a total of N8,291,200 under the pretext of securing them employment at Neo Psychiatric Hospital, Enugu.

Egotanwa was arrested on 30 July 2026 by personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State following complaints from 16 individuals. The complainants said she had collected N6,193,000 from them after promising to help them obtain jobs at the hospital, but the promised positions never materialised.

She was transferred to the EFCC on 26 August 2026 for further inquiries. During the Commission’s investigation, five additional people filed petitions against her, alleging that she had taken a further N2,098,200 from them on the same false promise of employment at the same hospital.

One of the petitioners stated: “I paid the total sum of N1,050,000 on 28 December 2025. I made the payment in good faith because I believed that the employment opportunity she presented to me was genuine. However, after making the payment, the promised employment did not materialise. I subsequently experienced difficulty reaching her and there were periods she did not respond to my calls or messages.”

Investigators found that Egotanwa, who is already awaiting trial in a separate alleged employment scam case, is said to have obtained the money by false pretence from the 21 victims between 28 December 2025 and 30 June 2026. She allegedly used several accounts belonging to different Point of Sale agents to receive the funds. She has admitted committing the offence.

The EFCC said she will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is concluded.
