The United States Air Force has withdrawn all bomber aircraft from RAF Fairford following a suspected terror attack at the base last month, the Pentagon has confirmed.
In a statement, the Pentagon said the decision to remove the aircraft from the Gloucestershire base had been taken as a precautionary measure while security reviews are carried out. Officials did not disclose how many aircraft were moved, where they have been relocated to, or how long they are expected to remain away from the United Kingdom.
RAF Fairford, which has hosted American bomber deployments for decades, was the target of a suspected terror attack on 27 September. Details of the incident have not been made public, but police and military authorities said at the time that an investigation was under way.
The Ministry of Defence said it continues to work closely with the United States and that security at bases used by American forces remains under constant review. The Air Force said operations would continue without interruption from other locations.
