President Donald Trump has demanded that Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar resign from Congress at once. In a post on Truth Social, he asserted that her legal name is not the one under which she was elected and sworn in, but rather Ilhan Nur Said Elmi.
Trump wrote that this was an “entirely different name” and noted that it matches the surname of Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the man Omar legally married in 2009. He repeated longstanding claims that Elmi is her brother, that the pair married and had children together, and that she used a false identity. When asked in a recent interview whether she had married her brother, Omar replied, “Not to my knowledge.” Trump interpreted this as an admission and stated that she “has openly admitted to FRAUD.” He further claimed that the Democratic Party had “just conceded her seat” and urged that House Speaker James Michael Johnson be informed that Omar “will not be legally allowed to be a Member of this August Body from this point forth.”
The remarks follow a court filing signed by United States Attorney Jeanine Pirro. In a motion seeking more time to respond to requests to unseal search warrant records, the filing refers to “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” The document relates to a federal search of Omar’s Washington residence on 12 October as part of an ongoing investigation into possible immigration and citizenship issues. Agents reportedly seized electronic devices, notebooks and a passport. No charges have been filed, and the filing itself does not establish that any fraud occurred or that Elmi is Omar’s brother.
Omar’s office has rejected the suggestion that her public name is false. A spokesperson told reporters: “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name.” In an interview with MS NOW’s Chris Hayes, Omar described the brother marriage allegation as originating on a Somali online forum years ago and later amplified by critics. She called related accounts “insane” and has previously denied the claims.
The allegation that Omar married her brother to facilitate immigration has circulated since at least 2016. Multiple independent reviews, including by Snopes, PolitiFact and the Minneapolis Star Tribune, have found no credible evidence supporting it. Public records confirm a legal marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in February 2009 and a divorce finalised in 2017. Omar became a United States citizen in 2000, years earlier. She has stated that Elmi was a British citizen and that their relationship ended in 2011 under their faith tradition. Investigators have not publicly produced documents, DNA results or other verified proof linking the two as siblings.
Trump’s assertion that the Democratic Party has conceded the seat reflects his own position rather than any formal action by the party or the House. Omar continues to serve as the representative for Minnesota’s Fifth District while the federal investigation proceeds
