Peter Obi Calls on President to Account for Subsidy Savings, Borrowings and Outcomes

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has written an open message to the President, congratulating him on spending a night in Akwa Ibom State. He noted that the visit took the President outside Lagos and Abuja, and expressed hope that he enjoyed the warmth, hospitality and cuisine of the state. Obi observed that these were likely better than the destinations where the President has spent more than 260 days outside Nigeria since assuming office.

He expressed the hope that the Akwa Ibom visit would encourage travel to the remaining 33 states of the federation. Such visits, he said, should involve spending time with the people and explaining the use of public resources. These include the 15.8 trillion naira saved from the removal of fuel subsidy, the more than 100 billion dollars borrowed, the increased revenues from taxing Nigerians, and the additional government revenues that the administration celebrated last year as having surpassed its target.

Obi stated that Nigerians deserve to know how many people were pulled out of poverty in this period, how many children out of school were returned to school, and how many functional primary health care centres have been built. They also deserve to know how much electricity supply has improved, particularly in light of the promise that if power is not fixed, Nigerians should not vote for the administration. An explanation is equally due, he added, on how the country has been secured, given that it still ranks among the most terrorised countries in the world.

He emphasised that Nigerians deserve answers about what has been done with the resources entrusted to the government. Obi concluded that the New Nigeria to be built will rest on accountability, transparency, and the physical, measurable impact of public resources on the lives of citizens.
