The Nigeria Democratic Congress has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of seeking to constrict the democratic space and muzzle opposition parties ahead of future elections.
In a press statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC said it was sad to note that desperate attempts to limit political activity by opposition groups were on the increase. The party claimed it had not only been subjected to violent attacks by agents of the APC but had also become a soft target of discrimination by hoteliers and the hospitality industry in Abuja.
According to the statement, Rockview Hotel in Abuja cancelled agreed bookings for NDC meetings on two occasions without genuine excuse. The first cancellation occurred at the last minute when the hotel rejected a request to host the party’s second National Executive Committee meeting in June 2026. More recently, the hotel refused the use of its facilities for another meeting, telling the party the decision was an order from above.
The NDC further stated that BON Hotel in Wuse, Abuja, bluntly refused the use of its facilities for a meeting even though the party had met all conditions placed in its path. The party also reported difficulties surrounding the recent unveiling of its National Campaign Council. At the last minute, the chosen host called to refund the payment already made and said it was no longer interested in making the facilities available, an action the NDC suggested may have followed threats and orders from above. The party said its refusal to yield eventually compelled the hotel to honour the booking for which payment had been received.
The statement declared that such conduct was not democracy. It called on the APC to allow all parties to campaign without let or hindrance and to give Nigerians the opportunity to choose who governs them. The NDC also implored well meaning Nigerians and lovers of democracy to call out Rockview Hotel and BON Hotel for what it described as their anti people and anti democratic actions.
The party concluded that Nigerians deserve better and that the NDC is prepared to serve with passion and patriotism. It ended with the slogan that a new Nigeria is possible and that the country can do it.
