In a shocking development, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has announced his immediate resignation, citing health concerns. The former Kano State Governor’s departure marks a significant turning point for the APC, which has been grappling with internal strife and allegations of financial impropriety during his tenure.
Mr Ganduje, who assumed the role of APC National Chairman in August 2023, has faced a tumultuous period in office. His leadership was plagued by party infighting, legal challenges, and accusations of mismanagement. Prior to his chairmanship, Ganduje served as Kano State Governor from 2015 to 2023, a tenure also dogged by controversy.
In April 2024, a Kano State High Court issued an ex parte order restraining Ganduje from presenting himself as an APC member, following a suit filed by party executives. Additionally, the APC North Central Forum initiated a legal challenge in a Federal High Court in Abuja to oust him, though the suit was later struck out.
In his resignation letter, Ganduje attributed his decision to step down to deteriorating health, stating a need to prioritise his well-being. However, sources within the APC suggest that mounting political pressures played a significant role. Reports indicate that some party members protested against what they described as “excessive financial demands” imposed by his office, particularly affecting aspiring candidates for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections. These candidates reportedly faced hefty fees to secure the party’s ticket, sparking widespread discontent.
Allegations of financial impropriety have further clouded Ganduje’s exit, with critics pointing to a lack of transparency in the party’s financial dealings under his leadership.
Ganduje’s abrupt resignation leaves the APC at a crossroads, with questions swirling about the party’s next steps. The APC has yet to release an official statement, fuelling speculation about the broader implications for its leadership and unity ahead of future elections.
The resignation not only underscores the deep-seated challenges within the APC but also raises questions about its ability to resolve internal conflicts and present a united front.
As the APC prepares to appoint a new chairman, the circumstances surrounding Ganduje’s departure are likely to remain a focal point of debate, with many calling for greater accountability and reform within the party.
