Abuja, 10 April 2026 – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of its proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise, which will now take place after the 2027 General Election.
The decision was made today during a meeting between the Commission and all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs). Following deliberations on the planned exercise, INEC resolved to defer the programme.
In a press statement issued this evening, the Commission emphasised that the voter revalidation exercise remains a critical component of its mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters. The initiative is designed to verify and review existing voter records, ensure the accuracy of personal data, eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries, and strengthen the overall integrity of the voter register. It would also have given registered voters the opportunity to confirm their details and make any necessary corrections.
Despite the delay, INEC reaffirmed its commitment to the conduct of free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections.
