New US Consul General Rick Swart Arrives in Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria – The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced the arrival of its new Consul General, Rick Swart, in Lagos, marking the beginning of a three-year tenure aimed at enhancing bilateral partnerships across southern Nigeria.

In a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the US Mission Nigeria invited the public to welcome Mr Swart, highlighting his extensive experience as a career diplomat with postings around the world. “Join us in welcoming our new Consul General, Rick Swart, as he arrives in Lagos!” the post read. It further elaborated that Mr Swart will be travelling across the 17 states under the Consulate General’s area of responsibility to engage with local communities, immerse himself in Nigeria’s vibrant culture, and strengthen the US-Nigeria partnership.

The announcement also encouraged public participation, asking for suggestions on activities and sights Mr Swart should explore in Lagos and southern Nigeria. “Do you have any ideas on things #CGSwart should see and do in Lagos and across southern Nigeria? Let us know in the comment section!” the post stated.

The US Consulate General in Lagos oversees diplomatic relations in the 17 southern states of Nigeria, which comprise the South West, South East, and South South geopolitical zones. These states are:

  • South West: Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo
  • South East: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo
  • South South: Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Rivers

This appointment comes as the US continues to deepen its engagement with Nigeria, focusing on economic, cultural, and security collaborations in the region. Mr Swart succeeds his predecessor in a role that plays a pivotal part in fostering ties between the two nations.

The public response to the post has been enthusiastic, with many Nigerians sharing recommendations ranging from visiting iconic landmarks like the National Museum in Lagos to experiencing local festivals and cuisine across the southern states.
