US Embassy in Abuja suspends visa appointments after authorising non-emergency staff and relations to leave

The United States Embassy in Abuja has closed for visa appointments, the US Mission to Nigeria has announced.

This development comes shortly after the embassy authorised its non-emergency staff and their relations to leave Nigeria.

In a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter, officials said the embassy in the Nigerian capital would no longer be accepting visa bookings until further notice. Applicants affected by the suspension have been advised to check their emails for details of rescheduled appointments.

The announcement added that visa operations at the US Consulate General in Lagos would continue as normal.

“U.S. Embassy Abuja is closed for visa appointments. Applicants should check their email for details on rescheduled appointments. Visa operations at U.S. Consulate General Lagos continue,” the post read.

American citizen services remain available in emergencies and by appointment at both posts.

The US Mission has not given a specific reason for either the suspension of visa services in Abuja or the earlier authorisation for non-emergency staff and their relations to depart. Applicants are advised to monitor their emails and the official US Embassy website for further updates.
