Abuja, 13 August 2025 – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has launched an investigation into renowned Fuji musician Mr Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, following accusations of unruly behaviour at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. The probe stems from a petition by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), which alleges that the artist obstructed the safe operation of a ValueJet aircraft on 5 August 2025, in violation of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations 2023.
According to reports, the incident occurred when KWAM 1 was barred from boarding ValueJet flight VK 201 from Abuja to Lagos. The airline stated that he insisted on carrying a flask containing hot water, which contravened safety protocols prohibiting such items on board. Eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating online depict the musician attempting to prevent the aircraft from taking off, an action described by some as akin to “terrorism.” In one clip, KWAM 1 is seen on the tarmac, reportedly risking his safety as the plane’s engines revved up.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed the Commissioner of Police at the Airport Command to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter. “The Force hereby assures the public of its commitment to upholding safety and security within Nigeria’s aviation sector, while assuring stakeholders in the sector of improved collaboration towards aviation security and strict compliance with aviation laws,” stated DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, in a press release dated 12 August 2025.
KWAM 1, a prominent figure in Nigerian music and a known ally of President Bola Tinubu, has since issued an apology for his actions. In a video statement, he expressed regret for the disruption and took responsibility for his behaviour. However, critics argue that the incident highlights a pattern of elite impunity in Nigeria’s aviation sector, with calls for decisive action to prevent similar occurrences. Social media reactions have been mixed, with some condemning the musician’s conduct as “embarrassing and disgusting,” while others debate the handling of unruly passengers by airport authorities.
The NPF’s investigation is expected to uncover the full circumstances of the event, ensuring accountability and reinforcing compliance with aviation regulations. Stakeholders in the industry have welcomed the move, emphasising the need for stringent enforcement to maintain public confidence in air travel safety.
