LAGOS, 21 June 2025 – Nigeria is grappling with an alarming surge in violence that has transformed even once-peaceful regions into killing fields, according to former presidential candidate Peter Obi. In a scathing statement on social media, Obi highlighted a series of deadly attacks across the country in a single day, underscoring the diminishing value placed on human life.
In Kano, a bomb explosion claimed at least five lives and injured many others. In Plateau, 12 wedding guests were brutally killed and 11 injured in a vicious assault. Kebbi saw 30 people slain as bandits rampaged unchecked. In Borno, a female suicide bomber detonated, killing 24 citizens. Meanwhile, in Katsina, a police inspector was gunned down by bandits. These incidents, Obi noted, are but a snapshot of the violence spreading to every corner of Nigeria, with many more cases going unreported.
“For a country that is not even at war, the regularity of bloodletting of innocent souls has reduced the news value of human deaths,” Obi wrote, expressing dismay at the apparent indifference of Nigeria’s leaders. He warned that the unchecked insecurity and corruption are not only destroying lives but also tarnishing the nation’s global reputation.
Obi called for insecurity to be treated as a top national priority, urging authorities to view criticism as constructive guidance rather than dissent. He accused the current administration of failing the nation by allowing violence and other vices to thrive, stating, “The grieving Nigerians are not shown any empathy by leaders.”
The former governor of Anambra State appealed for immediate action, stressing that all stakeholders must unite to address the crisis. “We must act now to save our country. Nigerians deserve to live,” he declared.
