Obi Hails Nigerian Forces’ Anti-Terror Gains

Lagos, Nigeria – Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has praised the Nigerian security agencies for their recent successes in combating terrorism, kidnappings, and banditry, describing the achievements as a “remarkable feat” and a crucial step towards restoring peace in the country.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Mr Obi highlighted the courage displayed by the nation’s “gallant officers and men in uniform,” who often operate under challenging conditions. He emphasised that their sacrifices underscore the possibility of a safe Nigeria for all citizens.

“I commend the Nigerian security agencies for their recent achievements in the fight against terrorism, kidnappings, and banditry,” Mr Obi wrote. “This is indeed a remarkable feat and a step in the right direction in our collective struggle against insecurity and in restoring peace to our dear country.”

The Labour Party politician saluted the professionalism of the security forces and urged for improved support, including better equipment, training, and motivation to maintain these gains. However, he warned that vigilance must extend beyond arrests, stressing the importance of ensuring justice is fully served to prevent impunity.

“Terrorism and violent criminality thrive when justice is not served, when those arrested are recycled back into society without accountability,” he added. “Justice must take its full course so that impunity is not encouraged.”

Mr Obi, who ran as the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election, concluded by underscoring that security forms the bedrock of national development. “Let this victory remind us that security is the foundation of every meaningful development,” he stated. “A secure Nigeria is possible, and together we must support our security agencies with the right leadership, resources, and political will to end the reign of terror in our land.”

The statement comes amid ongoing efforts by the Nigerian government to address widespread insecurity, particularly in the northern regions plagued by banditry and insurgent activities. Mr Obi’s comments have sparked discussions on social media, with many users echoing calls for sustained action and accountability in the justice system.
