Borno’s Security Crisis: Peter Obi Sounds National Alarm

Maiduguri, 20 May 2025 – Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has issued a passionate call to action over the worsening security crisis in Borno State, labelling it a "national alarm bell" that Nigeria cannot ignore. In a statement shared on social media, Obi underscored the perilous situation in the Marte area, where insurgents are regrouping and threatening to seize control of an entire local government.

Obi praised Governor Babagana Zulum’s leadership, noting that the governor’s decision to spend the night in a threatened town exemplifies "present, proactive, and people-centred" governance. Zulum’s actions, Obi argued, challenge federal authorities to translate words into decisive action. The governor has raised urgent concerns about insurgents consolidating around Lake Chad and the Mandara Hills, warning that Marte is on the verge of collapse.

The crisis has displaced over 20,000 people and left more than 300 communities vulnerable. "These are not just numbers," Obi wrote, "they are families, children, and communities whose hopes are hanging by a thread." He criticised the Federal Government’s delayed responses and distant approach, urging immediate reinforcements for security forces and concrete protection for displaced citizens.

Obi’s statement emphasised that securing Borno is integral to preserving Nigeria’s unity. "If we fail to protect Borno, we fail the idea of Nigeria itself," he warned, calling for leadership driven by "compassion, competence, and courage." He stressed that the issue transcends politics, describing it as a battle for "the soul of our nation."

With the window for action closing, Obi’s plea places significant pressure on federal authorities to respond swiftly. As Zulum leads by example, the nation watches to see if Abuja will meet the challenge.
