Lagos Court Convicts Former Banker for Bank Fraud

A Lagos State High Court has convicted a former banker, Chukwuebuka Nweke, for bank fraud following a case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

On Monday, 19 October 2026, Justice Ismail Ijelu of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja found Nweke guilty of the offence. Investigations established that on 21 June 2025, in Lagos, Nweke accessed a desktop computer assigned to Emmanuella Anyanwu without lawful authority. This action facilitated the unauthorised withdrawal of ₦1 million from an account belonging to Leelee Dumbari and held with one of the new generation banks.

The offence is contrary to Section 386(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

After concluding its investigations, the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the EFCC arraigned Nweke on a single count charge concerning the unlawful withdrawal of the sum from Leelee Dumbari’s account. Nweke pleaded not guilty, which led to a full trial. During the proceedings, prosecution counsel M.K. Bashir called five witnesses to prove the case against the defendant. The defence called one witness.

Delivering judgment, Justice Ijelu found Nweke guilty as charged. He sentenced the defendant to pay a fine of ₦1 million within 30 days, failing which he would be remanded in a Correctional Centre for six months.
