Enugu State Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah has rejected allegations that he ordered a private facility to be denied to a political party for its town hall meeting.
In a statement posted on X on Wednesday evening, the governor said his attention had been drawn to a video circulating on some social media platforms. The video alleged that he gave an order preventing a political party from using a private facility for their town hall event. Mbah described the claim as preposterous and an utter falsehood.
“This is shameful and reveals a desperate pattern adopted by the opposition to attract attention,” he stated. He affirmed that democracy guarantees freedom of expression but does not grant anyone the right to defamation. Democracy, he added, also offers avenues to seek redress. “So, let it be known that there are red lines that should never be crossed.”
The denial follows reports earlier on Wednesday that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) had accused the state administration of interference. The party said the management of Amadeo Event Centre, located along the Ebeano Tunnel in Enugu, withdrew the venue less than 24 hours before a scheduled town hall meeting. The event was set for Thursday, 29 October 2026, at 2:00 pm and was to feature the NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
According to the NDC, the venue had been paid for weeks earlier. Party officials claimed the facility owner, Pastor Ugo Chime, said he was under intense pressure not to allow the event. The NDC vowed to proceed with the meeting despite the withdrawal and described the development as an attempt to disrupt the peaceful political activities of the opposition in the state.
Mbah’s statement did not name the party or the facility involved. It focused on rejecting the specific allegation that he had issued an order and on warning against what he called defamation.
The exchange comes amid heightened political activity in Enugu State ahead of the 2027 elections. Mbah, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress in October 2025, has faced previous criticism from the NDC over alleged interference in opposition activities.
