Benue Governor Faces Backlash Over Public Holiday Decision

On 17th June 2025, the Benue State Government, led by Governor Hyacinth Alia, announced a public holiday for Wednesday 18th June 2025. This move honours the visit of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu GCFR to commiserate with the state over its security crises. The notice, issued by Secretary to the State Government DCNS Serumun Deborah Aber Esq., urges residents to welcome the President en masse.

The decision has sparked widespread condemnation. Critics argue that Governor Alia has failed to declare a holiday to mourn the numerous lives lost to violence in Benue, instead focusing on the presidential visit. This selective commemoration is seen as a neglect of duty and a lack of empathy towards the state’s suffering population.

Social media, including X posts, has branded the governor’s actions “unholy,” accusing him of prioritising political optics over the welfare of his people. The exemption of essential services from the holiday further suggests a ceremonial rather than compassionate intent.

Governor Alia’s administration is urged to reconsider its stance. A day of mourning for the victims would better reflect leadership and solidarity, rather than this perceived focus on protocol over people.
