Amaechi Resigns from APC, Declares Nigeria ‘Completely Destroyed’

Abuja, 2 July 2025 – Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the ruling party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of colluding to rig the upcoming elections. In a scathing interview following the unveiling of the interim executive of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja, Amaechi described Nigeria as “completely destroyed,” citing rampant inflation, widespread poverty, and an inability for citizens to afford basic necessities like food.

Amaechi, who confirmed his resignation from the APC on Tuesday night, expressed shock at not being expelled from the party earlier, having repeatedly warned them against inviting him to meetings. “I left APC last night. I never attended one meeting,” he said. “I was surprised that I wasn’t even expelled because I warned them in writing, don’t even invite me to any meeting. You can’t be in a club where the majority of people are stealing and you don’t say anything.”

The former minister, who served under President Bola Tinubu’s administration for two years, dismissed the notion that his actions were merely about changing the government. “It’s not about changing the government,” he stated. “It’s about changing Nigeria. Nigeria is completely destroyed. People can’t eat. There’s no money to buy food. Inflation is at its peak. And the federal government is busy trying to hijack the election. INEC is helping them.”

Amaechi was particularly critical of President Tinubu, asserting that he never believed the president was suited to govern Nigeria. He compared the current administration unfavourably to that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that the exchange rate has deteriorated significantly. “Dollar was ₦460 or five hundred and something [under Buhari], now a dollar is one thousand five hundred and eighty,” he said, describing the over 100% increase as indicative of economic mismanagement.

When challenged on whether the exchange rate could be a deliberate government policy, Amaechi retorted, “Any government that does not take into consideration the people you are governing is not a policy. President Tinubu said he is not here to make Nigerians happy.”

Calling for a broader movement beyond a mere political party, Amaechi urged Nigerians to “take over government” themselves. His remarks signal a significant shift in his political stance and a potential alignment with the ADC, though he stopped short of confirming any formal affiliation.
