Kano, Nigeria – Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and prominent Nigerian politician, visited Kano yesterday to offer condolences and support to local communities facing recent challenges. His visit included stops at the homes of the Dantata and Maitama Sule (Dan Masanin Kano) families, where he expressed his sympathies.
Obi then joined worshippers at the Triumph Juma’at Mosque for prayers, fulfilling a pledge to aid the mosque’s ongoing renovation. Speaking on the importance of such institutions, he stated, “Our places of worship are vital pillars in our communities to build unity, and we should endeavour to support them.”
Later, Obi visited the Kano Farm Centre GSM Market, where a recent fire devastated numerous shops, destroying livelihoods for many small and medium enterprise (SME) owners. He commended Kano State Governor for visiting the site and pledging to rebuild the market, describing the governor’s actions as a commendable display of compassion and support for affected traders.
Meeting with some of the impacted vendors, Obi expressed solidarity, saying, “I share in their pain. What they need now is urgent support and lasting solutions.” He emphasised the critical role of SMEs in Nigeria’s economic growth, calling for collective action to bolster these businesses.
Obi concluded his visit with a call for unity and responsive leadership, urging Nigerians to “stand with one another and build a country where leadership is present, especially when the people need it most.”
His actions in Kano highlight a continued commitment to community engagement and economic recovery, resonating with many who see SMEs and communal institutions as cornerstones of Nigeria’s development.
