Owerri, 4 July 2025 – Emeka Ihedioha, former governor of Imo State, has officially declared his allegiance to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape. Speaking to supporters of his Rebuild Imo Movement (RIM) at his Owerri residence on 3 July, Ihedioha announced, “My party, your party, our party is now ADC.” The declaration was further amplified on his X account on 4 July, solidifying his commitment to the opposition party.
This move comes on the heels of the ADC’s unveiling as the platform for a national opposition coalition in Abuja on 2 July, an event attended by Ihedioha and other prominent Nigerian politicians. The coalition is positioning itself as a formidable challenger to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ihedioha’s defection follows his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in April 2024, after which he remained unaffiliated with any political party. His decision to join the ADC has sparked speculation that he may be eyeing the governorship ticket in Imo State for the 2027 elections, leveraging his political experience and grassroots support through the RIM.
