Mr Aloy Ejimakor, lead counsel for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has strongly denied claims that he and his team took the separatist leader’s case back to court for trial.
In a detailed update posted on X, Mr Ejimakor described the allegations as “well-orchestrated lies and blackmail” originating from individuals who knew the facts because they were directly involved in the proceedings. He said the claims were “an abomination”.
Mr Ejimakor clarified that it was the Supreme Court of Nigeria — the country’s highest court — that overturned the Court of Appeal’s judgment of 13th October 2022 and ordered that the trial proceed.
He quoted directly from the Supreme Court ruling:
“In the final result, I find merit in this appeal and allow it. In consequence wherefore, the judgment of the Court of Appeal delivered on the 13th October, 2022 in the Respondent’s Appeal No. CA/ABJ/CR/625/2022, striking out the counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 15 of the charges in question and DISCHARGING the Respondent is hereby set aside in its entirety and it is ordered that the trial court shall proceed with the trial of the Respondent …”
The respondent referred to in the judgment is Mazi Nnamdi Kanu (MNK).
Mr Ejimakor emphasised that the Court of Appeal had only discharged Kanu on the relevant counts. It did not acquit him, contrary to what some had claimed. He noted that the Supreme Court used only the word “DISCHARGE” in its judgment.
He pointed out that the Supreme Court’s decision is final. No further appeal is possible, not even by the Federal Government.
Mr Ejimakor also shared a screenshot of the lawyers who represented Kanu at the Supreme Court hearing, with yellow highlights, inviting the public to “judge for yourselves where the truth lies”.
He explained that he had remained silent for some time, choosing “silence is golden” to protect Kanu, IPOB and their ongoing cases. However, he said he had now broken his silence because “times have changed and things have gone south badly”.
“The gloves are off,” he stated. “And there is much more to come (in defence of the truth).”
Mr Ejimakor added that anyone doubting his account could verify the details via Google, AI tools such as Grok, or any lawyer. He offered to post the full Court of Appeal judgment if requested in the comments.
The statement addresses ongoing public debate and misinformation surrounding the long-running legal proceedings against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who faces serious charges in Nigeria.
