Arsenal have booked their place in the 2026 UEFA Champions League final after a 1-0 victory over Atlético Madrid in the second leg of their semi-final at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.
Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of the evening shortly before half-time, securing a 2-1 aggregate triumph for the Gunners and sending the north London crowd into raptures.
The first leg in Madrid on 29 April had ended in a 1-1 draw, with Viktor Gyökeres converting a penalty for Arsenal and Julián Álvarez replying from the spot for the Spanish side. That left the tie finely balanced heading into the return fixture, where Mikel Arteta’s men needed to overcome a typically resilient Atlético Madrid outfit.
On a tense night at the Emirates, Arsenal dominated possession but found Diego Simeone’s renowned defence difficult to break down. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 44th minute when Saka produced a clinical finish. Despite Atlético pushing for an equaliser in the second half, the home side held firm, seeing out six minutes of added time to claim victory after 90+6 minutes.
The result marks a significant milestone for Arsenal, who will now contest the final on 30 May in Budapest. It is the club’s first appearance in the Champions League showpiece in more than a decade and renews hopes of European glory under Arteta.
