ADC Launches Global Network of Special Representatives to Strengthen Democratic Accountability in Nigeria

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the establishment of a Special Representatives Network in key international capitals, as part of a new initiative aimed at bolstering the party’s international engagement and promoting democratic accountability in Nigeria.

In a press statement issued from its national headquarters in Abuja, the opposition party said the move was prompted by a growing pattern of undemocratic practices and attacks on opposition members and leaders that have continued since July 2025. These include alleged attempts to destabilise opposition parties, undermine legitimate party leadership structures, and restrict democratic political participation.

The ADC described the network as a means of creating structured channels of communication with influential international stakeholders, particularly in countries and institutions that prioritise democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

Under the initiative, the party will appoint credible representatives as envoys in strategically chosen global capitals. These envoys will act as official points of contact between the ADC and a range of international actors, including foreign governments, parliamentary committees, international media organisations, democracy support institutions, and Nigerian diaspora communities.

The representatives will provide regular briefings on key issues concerning Nigeria’s political environment, such as political developments, human rights concerns, democratic governance, electoral integrity, and allegations of repression against opposition actors. They will also convey the ADC’s policy positions and reform proposals to international audiences.

The party stated that the primary objective is to ensure international partners and democratic institutions receive balanced and credible information about Nigeria’s political situation, rather than relying solely on official government narratives.

By institutionalising these engagement channels, the ADC said it aims to enhance its credibility as a responsible democratic actor and reinforce its position as a viable governing alternative committed to democratic norms and constitutional governance.

The party has identified the following locations for its strategic engagements, based on their global influence, commitment to democratic governance, and significant Nigerian diaspora communities: Washington, DC; London; Brussels; Berlin; Ottawa; Paris; Pretoria; Addis Ababa; Nairobi; Accra; Geneva; and New York.

In addition, the ADC will establish a National Documentation Initiative to systematically collect and record incidents affecting political participation nationwide. State-level party structures will be responsible for gathering data on threats, harassment, violent attacks, arbitrary arrests, and disruptions of political activities.

The statement emphasised that the initiative represents a strategic step towards strengthening the ADC’s international presence, improving the flow of credible information on political developments in Nigeria, and reinforcing its commitment to democratic governance, political accountability, and the protection of opposition rights.

The announcement was signed by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress.
