Kwankwaso resigns from NNPP with immediate effect

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, 29 March 2026, Senator Kwankwaso, who served as the party’s National Leader, said the decision had not been taken lightly but was necessary because of the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which he said calls for strategic realignment.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” the statement read. “As a committed and bona fide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make. However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”

Senator Kwankwaso expressed “profound gratitude” for the honour and privilege of having served the party. He thanked the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and the entire National Working Committee for their “steadfast support”.

He also extended his appreciation to the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and all levels of leadership across the party, from ward to state level. Special thanks were given to the legacy members of the party and all followers of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their dedication and commitment to the shared mission.

“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, PhD, FNSE, is the former governor of Kano State and was the NNPP’s flag-bearer in the 2023 general elections. The statement was signed in his name as “Former Kano State Governor, 2023 Presidential Candidate, New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)”.
