PDP Slams Tinubu’s Ambassadorial Nominees as “Scandalous” Reward for Alleged Electoral Misconduct

Abuja, 29 November 2025 – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has launched a blistering attack on President Bola Tinubu over his long-awaited list of ambassadorial nominees, describing it as “scandalous” and a revealing insight into the president’s own values.

In a strongly worded press statement issued on Friday and signed by National Publicity Secretary Comrade Ini Ememobong, the main opposition party accused the president of packing the list with “disgraced propagandists, characterless politicians, and public officials” who suffer from a widespread “integrity deficit” and a history of anti-democratic behaviour.

The PDP said Nigerians were “seriously appalled” by most of the nominees but “not totally surprised” given the track record of the Tinubu administration.

“A nominee is a clear and direct reflection of the values and estimation of the nominator,” the statement read. “By making these nominations, the President has shown Nigerians that these are the best people he has to represent our country.”

The opposition also highlighted the fact that it took President Tinubu nearly three years to forward the list to the Senate, suggesting this delay betrayed “the paucity of excellent people within his reach”.

Particular ire was reserved for the reported nomination of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the immediate-past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The PDP accused Professor Yakubu of presiding over an electoral body marred by “countless double-speaks, flip-flops, and undelivered promises” during the 2023 general election, which it claims “ultimately resulted in the birth of this administration, which is struggling in all areas of governance”.

Offering Professor Yakubu an ambassadorial posting, the party argued, exemplified a “skewed reward system” that could serve as an incentive for the current INEC leadership to deliver allegedly flawed elections in 2027 in anticipation of similar future rewards.

“The respect a country gets from other countries cannot be separated from the integrity profile and public perception of both the President and the Ambassadors,” the PDP warned, adding that sending envoys with “tainted political profiles” would be “a great disservice to Nigeria” and risk “a diplomatic all-time low”.

The party demanded that President Tinubu immediately withdraw the entire list and replace it with nominees possessing “stellar democratic credentials and high moral standing” capable of commanding global respect.

As of the time of writing, the Presidency has yet to respond officially to the PDP’s allegations. The ambassadorial list, which has been forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation, is expected to spark heated debate when senators resume plenary next week.
