Ibadan, Oyo State – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expelled Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), along with former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose and the party’s suspended National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, in a dramatic move announced at its national convention.
The expulsions were declared on Saturday during the PDP’s gathering in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, marking a significant escalation in the party’s internal conflicts.
Wike, the former Governor of Rivers State, has been at odds with the PDP leadership following his acceptance of a ministerial role in President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government. Fayose, known for his outspoken style during his tenure as Ekiti governor, and Anyanwu, who was already under suspension, were also named in the purge.
Party officials cited anti-party activities and breaches of the PDP constitution as grounds for the expulsions, though specific details were not elaborated in the announcement. The decision comes amid ongoing efforts to reorganise the opposition party ahead of future elections.
The convention, attended by delegates from across Nigeria, focused on unity and restructuring, but the expulsions dominated proceedings. PDP spokespersons have yet to release a full statement, but the move is expected to intensify factional tensions within the party.
This development underscores the PDP’s attempts to assert discipline as it positions itself against the ruling APC. Further reactions from the expelled members and party stakeholders are anticipated in the coming days.
