Abuja, 23 July 2025 – Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, has expressed deep outrage over a tragic incident in Karana, Abuja, where police allegedly opened fire on unarmed residents protesting the demolition of their homes.
In a strongly worded press release issued today, Senator Kingibe described the event as “state-sponsored trauma” rather than legitimate law enforcement. She claimed that bullets were fired at civilians who were merely attempting to salvage their lives and dignity amidst the destruction of their properties, labelling the actions as unacceptable and indefensible.
“We cannot build a just society by bulldozing communities without compassion or firing at citizens instead of listening to them,” the senator stated. She highlighted the incident as a gross abuse of power, inflicting pain, fear, and indignity on the affected residents – violations she said no human being deserves, least of all in the nation’s capital.

Senator Kingibe called for swift action from the relevant authorities to investigate the “heinous act,” ensure those responsible are brought to justice, and provide the victims with necessary care, protection, and compensation. She urged the government to reconsider its approach to urban development, warning that it must not treat people as mere obstacles to progress.
“This is a moment for sober reflection, not bureaucratic excuses,” she added. “I will not stay silent while those I represent bleed. Abuja must not become a place where the poor live in fear of the very government meant to serve them.”
The senator’s statement comes amid ongoing concerns about urban renewal projects in Abuja, though official responses from the police or government have yet to be issued.
