Peter Mbah: South East Will reconsider their membership of PDP

Enugu, Nigeria – Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State hosted a high-profile delegation of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leaders at the Government House on Sunday, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, PDP Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, and South East Zonal Chairman Chief Ali Odefa. The meeting, attended by prominent figures such as former National Chairman Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, Senator Sam Egwu, and others, focused on the party’s internal challenges and the need for stronger democracy, unity, and justice within its ranks.

Governor Mbah, speaking after the engagement, reiterated the South East’s growing frustration with the PDP’s leadership, particularly over the unresolved issue of the National Secretary position. He referenced a recent South East Zonal meeting in Enugu, where the caucus demanded that the party respect the zone’s stance on the matter. “The position of the South East with respect to the National Secretaryship of the party, as issued in that communiqué, is sacrosanct,” Mbah stated.

The governor also expressed support for the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Monday, 30 June 2025, but issued a stern warning about the region’s future in the party. Mbah, who addressed the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu over the weekend, made it clear that the South East, including himself, could reconsider their membership if the PDP fails to address its internal disarray. “While I am still a member of the PDP, the South East reserves the right to review our continued membership if the party is unwilling to put its house in order,” he declared.

The meeting underscores mounting tensions within the PDP as the South East zone pushes for greater influence and fairness in the party’s decision-making processes. With the NEC meeting looming, all eyes will be on whether the PDP can resolve these grievances and avert a potential exodus of key regional leaders.
