Nigerian Political Analyst Calls for Southern Presidency in 2027

Nigeria – 6 July 2025

Prominent Nigerian political commentator, Abdul Mahmud, known as the “Great Oracle Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary” on social media, has sparked debate with his bold stance on the 2027 Nigerian presidential election. In a series of posts on X on 23 February 2026, Mahmud outlined his views on the need for a southern presidency and a coalition to challenge the ruling party.

Mahmud strongly advocates for zoning and inclusion, arguing that a coalition is essential to defeat a ruling party he describes as “drunk on power.” He insists that the 2027 presidency should be a “purely southern affair,” following the precedent set in 2023. According to Mahmud, northern presidential aspirants should step aside, as the north’s tenure was fulfilled by former President Muhammadu Buhari. He further stated that any southern president elected in 2027 would serve a single term ending in 2031.

The analyst dismissed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s potential candidacy, asserting that the north has no claim to the 2027 race. Instead, he highlighted a contest between Rotimi Amaechi, who has declared his intention to run, and Peter Obi, the former Labour Party candidate. Mahmud unequivocally endorsed Obi, declaring, “My choice is Obi, and Obi shall become the ticket holder!”
