Rabat, Morocco – 26 July 2025 – In a thrilling comeback victory, Nigeria’s Super Falcons overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), securing their record-extending 10th title in the tournament’s history.
The match, held at the packed Stade Mohammed V in Rabat, saw Morocco dominate the early proceedings, racing to a commanding 2-0 lead within the first half-hour. The Atlas Lionesses struck first in the 12th minute when striker Fatima Zahra capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot home from close range. They doubled their advantage just 15 minutes later, with midfielder Aisha El-Mansouri unleashing a stunning long-range effort that left Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie rooted to the spot.
Nigeria, however, refused to buckle under the pressure of the partisan home crowd. The Super Falcons mounted a spirited fightback in the second half, pulling one back in the 52nd minute through captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who headed in a pinpoint cross from the right flank. The equaliser arrived just eight minutes later, as forward Asisat Oshoala showcased her clinical finishing to level the scores at 2-2 with a powerful strike from inside the penalty area.
With the game seemingly headed for extra time, Nigeria delivered the decisive blow in the 88th minute. Substitute Uchenna Kanu latched onto a through ball and calmly finished past the onrushing Moroccan goalkeeper, sparking wild celebrations among the Nigerian contingent and silencing the home supporters.
The victory marks a remarkable turnaround for Nigeria, who had faced criticism earlier in the tournament for inconsistent performances. For Morocco, the defeat is a bitter pill to swallow, especially as hosts and after their impressive run to the final, including a semi-final triumph over defending champions South Africa.
Nigeria’s head coach, praised his team’s resilience post-match: “To come back from 2-0 down against a strong side like Morocco, in their own backyard, shows the character of this group. This win is for the fans back home who’ve supported us through thick and thin.”
The 2025 WAFCON, hosted entirely in Morocco for the first time, featured 12 teams from across the continent and highlighted the growing competitiveness in African women’s football. Nigeria’s triumph not only cements their dominance but also qualifies them automatically for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
As the confetti settled on the pitch, the Super Falcons lifted the trophy amid chants of victory, etching another chapter in their storied legacy.
