Nigeria Declares Public Holiday in Honour of Late  Buhari

Abuja, Nigeria – 14 July 2025 – The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, 15 July 2025, a public holiday to commemorate the life and legacy of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away recently.

This announcement comes as part of the seven-day period of national mourning proclaimed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during which national flags are to be flown at half-mast across the country starting from Sunday, 13 July 2025.

The declaration was made by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government and with the approval of President Tinubu. In a press statement, the Minister described the holiday as a tribute to Buhari’s dedicated service to the nation, his pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, and his lasting impact on governance and national development.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the Minister stated. “This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld.”

Dr Tunji-Ojo further encouraged citizens to observe the day by fostering peace, patriotism, and national cohesion, aligning with Buhari’s vision for a prosperous and united Nigeria.

The Federal Government also extended its deepest condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State—his home state—and all Nigerians, while offering prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.

Muhammadu Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023, was widely recognised for his efforts in combating corruption, enhancing security, and promoting economic reforms during his tenure. His passing marks the end of an era for many Nigerians who viewed him as a steadfast leader committed to the country’s advancement.
