Nigeria Police Take Swift Action on Officer Misconduct in Benin and Abuja

LAGOS, 7 May 2025 — The Nigeria Police Force has responded decisively to two recent incidents of unprofessional conduct by officers, as detailed in a statement released on Wednesday via their official X account (@PoliceNG). The incidents, which gained widespread attention through viral videos, prompted immediate investigations and disciplinary measures.

In the first case, a video posted on 26 April by an online blog highlighted inappropriate behaviour by police officers in Benin City, Edo State. The officers, identified as personnel from the Zone 5 Zonal Counter-Terrorism Unit (ZCA), were recorded acting unprofessionally around Airport Road. Following public outcry and complaints of high-handedness, the implicated officers were summoned to the Force Headquarters in Abuja two days ago. They are currently undergoing an orderly room trial, a formal disciplinary procedure under police regulations.

In a separate incident, a video that surfaced on 5 May 2025 captured an Assistant Superintendent of Traffic (AST) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) behaving in a manner deemed inconsistent with the Nigeria Police Force’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). The officer has been identified, summoned to Abuja, and issued an official query to address his unprofessional conduct. The administrative process to review this infraction is ongoing.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to transparency and accountability, assuring the public that updates on the disciplinary proceedings will be provided. The statement also expressed gratitude to citizens for raising concerns, noting that public feedback is crucial in upholding professional standards.

“We appreciate citizens for speaking up and reinforcing the professional standards expected of our officers. Your voice is vital in helping us serve you better,” the statement read.

These actions underscore the Force’s efforts to address misconduct and rebuild public trust, particularly in light of growing scrutiny over police conduct in Nigeria. The outcomes of the disciplinary measures are expected to set a precedent for accountability within the Force.
