NBA Demands Urgent Action on Abduction of Young Lawyer

Lokoja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has issued a passionate plea for the immediate release of Onyesom Peace Udoka, a newly called lawyer, and her sister, who were abducted along the Lokoja–Okene axis in Kogi State. The incident occurred as they were returning from the recent Call to Bar Ceremony in Abuja, casting a shadow over what should have been a moment of professional celebration.

In a statement released on X by NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, the association expressed profound shock and condemnation of the abduction, describing it as “unacceptable and utterly condemnable.” The NBA highlighted the growing insecurity on Nigeria’s roads, noting that no citizen should live in constant fear of such harrowing ordeals.

The association has called on the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to act swiftly to secure the safe release of Ms. Udoka, her sister, and other abducted victims. “The safety and security of Nigerians cannot continue to be treated with levity,” Osigwe stated, emphasising that it is the government’s primary duty to protect its citizens.

The NBA further urged authorities to intensify efforts to secure highways across the country and restore public confidence in the government’s ability to ensure safe travel. The association extended its solidarity to the families of the victims, praying for their safe and speedy return.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges of insecurity in Nigeria, particularly on major transport routes, prompting renewed calls for decisive government action.
