Lagos, Nigeria – On the eve of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, 12th June 2025, the Lagos State Police Commissioner, CP Olohundare Jimoh, convened a crucial meeting with leaders of fifteen Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to ensure peaceful celebrations and planned protests. The interactive session, held at the Commissioner’s office, focused on maintaining public safety and order during the national commemoration.
The meeting saw representatives from groups including Access to Advocacy & Rights of People, Center for Indigene Government Group, Human Right Monitor, and Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, among others. Discussions centred on coordinating activities for Democracy Day, with half of the CSOs confirming their intent to join nationwide celebrations, while the other half planned peaceful protests.
To streamline protest activities, all groups agreed to assemble at Ikeja Under-Bridge and proceed together to Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota, the sole designated protest venue. The Commissioner and CSO leaders mutually emphasised that no demonstrations would occur elsewhere, reinforcing a commitment to public safety and order.
Key attendees included Mr Akintunde Adedeji, Mr Omokehinde Agbede, Mr Kehinde Adeoye, and Comrade Isa Oyetunji, who assured CP Jimoh that the resolutions reached would be communicated to their members. The dialogue underscored a shared commitment to upholding peace and law during the Democracy Day events.
As Lagos prepares for the celebrations, the collaborative efforts between the police and CSOs signal a proactive approach to balancing civic expression with public security.
