Labour Party to Suspend and Expel Obi, Says National Publicity Secretary

Lagos, Nigeria – The Labour Party is set to suspend and expel its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, according to a statement from the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi. The decision, expected to be formalised during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, comes in the wake of Obi’s move to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.

“We are conveying a NEC meeting where he (Peter Obi) will be suspended. Obi will be expelled from our party,” Arabambi declared, signalling a significant rift within the Labour Party’s leadership.

The announcement follows Obi’s recent alignment with the ADC coalition, a move that has reportedly deepened tensions within the Labour Party. Arabambi did not elaborate on additional reasons for the planned suspension and expulsion. Obi, a prominent figure who ran as the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 Nigerian presidential election, has yet to respond publicly to the claims.
