Abuja, 19 June 2025 – The Federal Republic of Nigeria has concluded its case against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The court has granted the defence 14 days to file a written address for a no-case submission. The prosecution was also given an additional 14 days to respond.
The trial, which has drawn significant attention both domestically and internationally, was adjourned to 18 July 2025. Kanu, who faces charges related to his agitation for the secession of Biafra from Nigeria, has been in detention since his arrest in June 2021.
The case remains a focal point of debate, with Kanu’s legal team expected to argue that the prosecution has failed to present sufficient evidence to warrant a conviction.
The adjournment provides both sides with time to prepare their arguments, as the court prepares to consider the no-case submission in the next hearing. The outcome of this trial is likely to have significant implications for Nigeria’s political landscape.
