Gospel Singer Sentenced to Death for Murder of NYSC Member

Lafia, Nasarawa State – A High Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has sentenced gospel singer Oluwatimileyin Ajayi to death by hanging for the brutal murder of Salome Adaidu, a 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member. The judgement was delivered on Thursday, 26 June 2025, by Justice Simon Aboki.

Ajayi was convicted on a single count of culpable homicide under Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria, which carries a mandatory death penalty. Justice Aboki, in his ruling, stated that the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt that Ajayi willfully killed and dismembered Adaidu. “The evidence clearly demonstrates the accused’s intent to cause the death of the deceased. The law is unequivocal, and the punishment is death by hanging,” the judge declared.

The case, which has shocked the nation, stems from events in January 2025, when Ajayi was apprehended in the Papalana axis of New Karshi, Nasarawa State. He was caught attempting to dispose of Adaidu’s severed head while her dismembered body parts were later discovered at his residence. Adaidu, who was serving at Nicon Insurance in Abuja, had reportedly visited Ajayi at his home when the gruesome act occurred.

The trial, which drew significant public attention, revealed chilling details of the crime. Despite Ajayi initially pleading not guilty, the overwhelming evidence, including his apprehension with the victim’s remains, led to his conviction. Posts on X following the verdict reflected a mix of relief and outrage, with many Nigerians expressing hope that the judgement would serve as a deterrent to similar crimes.

The Nasarawa State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Jugbo Hauwa Samuel, had taken over the prosecution earlier in the year, ensuring a thorough legal process. The sentencing marks the culmination of months of legal proceedings and public discourse surrounding the tragic loss of the young corps member.
